Disarming the Gut Punch: Addressing Microaggressions with Resilience and Strength
Attention, 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Boulder community members! Join the Ombuds Office and Dr. Rachana Bhave for the first part of our two-part series on microaggressions. Microaggressions refer to subtle yet harmful comments or actions that perpetuate stereotypes about historically marginalized groups. However, the term ‘micro’ belies the significant emotional toll these experiences can have on individuals, whether they’re targeted directly or bearing witness to such incidents. In this interactive session, Dr. Rachana Bhave from the CTL will explore some practical strategies to articulate and call attention to the impact of such interactions, while also centering one’s own emotional well-being in its aftermath.
Disarming the Gut Punch Through RELATE-ing: Bridging Intent and Impact
Microaggressions often convey hidden messages that reveal biased beliefs about historically marginalized groups. These interactions are difficult to discern and can have lasting harm on individuals. However, when reported, individuals committing such microaggressions are likely to feel challenged and defensive, which may unintentionally extend more harm. RELATE-ing can provide a useful framework for individuals to address their behaviors without negating its impact. Join Dr. Rachana Bhave from the CTL in an interactive session to explore RELATE strategies aimed at addressing micro-aggressions through bridging the gap between intent and impact of such statements. This is part two of a two part series on microaggressions.
