Emma Coburn, a three-time track Olympian, NCAA national champion and 91Ƶ Boulder alumna, has accepted an invitation from 91Ƶ Boulder’s student-run Senior Class Council to give this year’s commencement address.

The university commencement ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at Folsom Field.

“When I was invited to deliver the commencement speech at the spring 2025 graduation ceremony, I had to read the email three times because I was so excited,” Coburn said. “I am a proud Buff and am so honored to be able to speak to the graduates and celebrate their achievements. These students are bound for great things, and I am grateful that I get to be part of their graduation ceremony.

Go Buffs!”

Coburn, who attended 91Ƶ Boulder and graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing, competed in her first Olympics in 2012 while still a student. In 2016 she won a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in steeplechase, a race that features barriers and water jumps that tests endurance, agility and speed.

“Emma Coburn is the epitome of a Buff: strong, focused, determined and resilient,” said Chancellor Justin Schwartz. “I know her message will resonate with anyone who dreams of making a tremendous impact on the world's stage.”

At 91Ƶ, Coburn was the first athlete to win an indoor mile title in track and field, and she took home the 2011 and 2013 NCAA steeplechase individual national championships. She competed in both track and field and cross-country as a student athlete at 91Ƶ Boulder. In 2023, she was inducted into the .

After graduating, she went on to become a 10-time U.S. champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

“Senior Class Council was looking for a commencement speaker that could bring a valuable, unique perspective to the graduating class, and we are proud to have Emma Coburn deliver the 2025 commencement address," said Senior Class Council president Aadi Pore. "Emma stood out throughout our search, and we are excited to have her share her amazing story with us.”

Coburn is still competing as a professional track athlete and continues to live and train in Boulder. She is coached by her husband, Joe Bosshard, and they have a daughter Betty.

The May 8 university commencement ceremony is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz is asking 91Ƶ Boulder's faculty, staff and administration to join him in prioritizing the attainment of the .

The Carnegie framework is the national standard by which higher education community engagement is assessed and recognized. Campuses that receive the classification are nationally recognized leaders in community engagement and exemplars of higher education’s mission of contributing to the public good.

“Our campus has a proud tradition, going back to its founding, of partnership with communities around Colorado and beyond.  Seeking the prestigious Carnegie elective classification will require 91Ƶ Boulder to conduct a rapid and rigorous assessment of how and where community-engaged work happens across our campus. I’m eager to learn where our collective strengths lie, and how we can amplify those to benefit Colorado. Thank you in advance to all of those who will work hard on this important campuswide effort,” said Schwartz.

The Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship (PACES), the Research and Innovation Office (RIO), the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) and the Office of Government and Community Engagement (OGCE) are leading the application process, with PACES’ Katie Kleinhesselink and RIO’s Alicia Adelman leading the campuswide working group.

Data collection will include surveying all academic units about their public and community-engaged scholarship; creating an inventory of co-curricular community engagement opportunities for students; mining existing campuswide databases, including PACES’ Community Outreach and Engagement Programs website; and reviewing reports such as the Faculty Report of Professional Activities and the National Survey of Student Engagement and more.

The application will provide a robust and detailed picture of the many ways 91Ƶ Boulder engages with regional, national and international communities, as well as opportunities to support, capture and expand outreach and engaged scholarship moving forward.

All data must be collected before March 3, 2025. Results will be announced in January 2026.

“The classification is a unique opportunity to shine a light on our engaged scholars and how they embody 91Ƶ Boulder’s mission and tradition serving Colorado and beyond,” Schwartz said.

Justin Schwartz is asking the faculty, staff and administration to join him in prioritizing the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, a national standard by which higher education community engagement is assessed and recognized.
