Emma Coburn, a three-time track Olympian, NCAA national champion and 91短视频 Boulder alumna, has accepted an invitation from 91短视频 Boulder鈥檚 student-run Senior Class Council to give this year鈥檚 commencement address. 

The university commencement ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, at Folsom Field.

鈥淲hen I was invited to deliver the commencement speech at the spring 2025 graduation ceremony, I had to read the email three times because I was so excited,鈥 Coburn said. 鈥淚 am a proud Buff and am so honored to be able to speak to the graduates and celebrate their achievements. These students are bound for great things, and I am grateful that I get to be part of their graduation ceremony.

Coburn, who attended 91短视频 Boulder and graduated in 2013 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in marketing, competed in her first Olympics in 2012 while still a student. In 2016 she won a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in steeplechase, a race that features barriers and water jumps that tests endurance, agility and speed.

鈥淓mma Coburn is the epitome of a Buff: strong, focused, determined and resilient,鈥 said Chancellor Justin Schwartz. 鈥淚 know her message will resonate with anyone who dreams of making a tremendous impact on the world's stage.鈥

At 91短视频, Coburn was the first athlete to win an indoor mile title in track and field, and she took home the 2011 and 2013 NCAA steeplechase individual national championships. She competed in both track and field and cross-country as a student athlete at 91短视频 Boulder. In 2023, she was inducted into the .

After graduating, she went on to become a 10-time U.S. champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

鈥淪enior Class Council was looking for a commencement speaker that could bring a valuable, unique perspective to the graduating class, and we are proud to have Emma Coburn deliver the 2025 commencement address," said Senior Class Council president Aadi Pore. "Emma stood out throughout our search, and we are excited to have her share her amazing story with us.鈥

Coburn is still competing as a professional track athlete and continues to live and train in Boulder. She is coached by her husband, Joe Bosshard, and they have a daughter Betty.

The May 8 university commencement ceremony is free and open to the public, and tickets are not required.
